Undercrown started when the rollers at the Drew Estate factory were smoking so many Liga Privada cigars that management asked them to stop. They blended their own cigar instead, from many of the same tobaccos, and Jonathan Drew called it an inverse Liga Privada. It debuted in 2011 with a dark Mexican San Andres Negro wrapper, and it is made at La Gran Fabrica Drew Estate in Esteli, Nicaragua.
The Shade came in 2015 as a Connecticut shade blend with an Ecuadorian Connecticut wrapper, a Sumatran binder and Dominican and Nicaraguan filler. The Sun Grown followed in 2017 with an Ecuadorian Sumatra seed sun grown wrapper, a Connecticut River Valley stalk cut Habano binder and Nicaraguan filler that includes an aged ligero leaf from Nueva Segovia. Pick the Maduro for the dark original, the Shade for a lighter wrapper, and the Sun Grown for the version between them. Toro also stocks Undercrown 10 and Undercrown El Tigre.
