Oliva introduced Serie V in 2006. It is a blend of Nicaraguan long filler, including Jalapa Valley ligero that is fermented in a special way, with a Nicaraguan binder and a high priming sun grown wrapper. Oliva describes coffee and dark chocolate notes with a balanced spice. The Serie V Maduro uses a Mexican San Andres wrapper over Nicaraguan ligero.
The Serie V Melanio came in 2012 and is named for Melanio Oliva, the first man in the family to grow cigar tobacco. It uses a Sumatra seed wrapper grown in Ecuador over Nicaraguan binder and filler, and the Melanio Figurado was Cigar Aficionado's Cigar of the Year for 2014. The Melanio Maduro switches to a San Andres wrapper. Start with Serie V for the original blend, or Melanio for the Ecuadorian wrapper. For the shorter, thicker Oliva cigars, see Nub.
